We are pediatricians practicing on the often-maligned Texas-Mexico border. We chose to practice pediatrics in Brownsville because we have family roots in the area, and because we felt there was true need here.
Even in the best of times, providing high-quality health care in border communities is challenging.
Resources always seem to be dropping while need never stops growing.
Disease does not respect borders or walls.
Violence is an ever-growing concern for both providers and patients. And any physician who works in the Rio Grande Valley had better be ready to deal with age-old issues of language and culture.
