House votes to block Trump’s fake emergency. Now, it’s the Senate’s turn

SOUTHERN BORDER — The House passed a resolution today, 245-182, to block Trump’s fake emergency declaration to build a deadly, harmful and wasteful wall while further militarizing the southern border.

The resolution, introduced by Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX), seeks to overturn President Trump’s baseless emergency declaration and unconstitutional power grab that aims to sidestep Congress’ ability to decide how to spend taxpayer money.

Now that the resolution has passed the House, the Senate has 18 days to hold a vote and join the House in rebuking the president’s obsession to build a monument to himself for political gain. The Senate needs a simple majority to pass the resolution.

Vicki B. Gaubeca, director of the Southern Border Communities Coalition, issued the following statement:

“We applaud Representative Joaquin Castro for introducing this resolution, and thank the members of the House from both parties for passing it. The Senate must stand with the House against Trump’s despotic overreach in the name of his vanity wall. Trump’s power grab is an egregious step that again demonstrates this administration’s disregard for the checks and balances that are integral to our democracy, and Congress must do the utmost to stop it.

We know firsthand that there is no national emergency at the border — only a humanitarian crisis of Trump’s own making. Trump is manufacturing a crisis in one of the safest, most vibrant places in our nation to fulfill a campaign promise based on ignorance, hate and fear.

Real solutions for border enforcement must come from policy that is based on data, analysis, strengthened accountability, and consultation with border stakeholders. It is critical that Congress ensure that border communities are consulted in decisions that impact our quality of life and put a stop to this harmful, deadly and wasteful wall.”
