Christian Ramirez, Director of the Southern Border Communities Coalition (SBCC), issued the following statement on the swearing-in of Mark Morgan as the new chief of the U.S. Border Patrol:
"Chief Morgan's experience in Border Patrol's internal affairs office should provide him with a roadmap to better create and implement policy that helps Border Patrol agents serve and protect border regions more effectively.
The selection of Chief Morgan signals a recognition by Commissioner Kerlikowske of the urgent need to make a clean break from the culture of violence and impunity that has plagued the U.S. Border Patrol.
We look forward to our continued working relationship with Chief Morgan to ensure that Border Patrol reflects the highest professional policing practices by implementing sorely needed transparency, oversight, and accountability reforms."
