Virus Spreads in CA Detention Center as ICE Covers Up Pepper Spraying, Neglect

SAN DIEGO, CA — With the nation’s largest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases, the for-profit Otay Mesa Detention Center has become a national coronavirus hotspot as a record number of employees and detainees continue to fall ill. Vista Unified School District Passes Resolution Embracing a New Border Vision

SAN DIEGO, CA — On Thursday, April 9, the Vista Unified School Board passed a resolution to embrace a New Border Vision, a framework for well-functioning borders for the 21st century. The resolution was sponsored by Vista Unified School Board member Cipriano Vargas, and comes as U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has increased checkpoint operations in North County, blocking routes to healthcare facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Continue reading

San Francisco Passes ‘New Border Vision’ Resolution

SAN FRANCISCO, CA —  On Tuesday, March 17, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a resolution sponsored by District 9 Supervisor Hillary Ronen to embrace a New Border Vision, a framework for well-functioning borders for the 21st century. The resolution came in part as a response to the deployment of BORTAC — a highly-militarized unit of Border Patrol — to San Francisco, targeting the city’s most vulnerable communities. WASHINGTON — Southern Border Communities Coalition (SBCC), The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Sierra Club today filed a new lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s transfer of an additional $3.8 billion in military funds for border wall construction.
